2022 Monte Rosso Zinfandel, Moon Mountain
Monte Rosso Vineyard - Moon Mountain, Sonoma County
140+ year old Zinfandel Vines from the Historic Monte Rosso Vineyard at the top of Moon Mountain.
Monte Rosso Vineyard is perched high atop the Moon Mountain District in Sonoma County, California. Planted in the 1880s, it's famed for its distinctive red, iron-rich volcanic soils (hence the name "Red Mountain") and significant elevation. It's particularly renowned for its old-vine Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, which produce intensely flavored, structured, and age-worthy wines reflecting the rugged terroir. Considered one of California's true "grand cru" quality sites, its exceptional fruit has been sought after by prestigious wineries for decades, initially made famous by Louis M. Martini and now owned by E.& J. Gallo.
Profile
The palate is full-bodied, rich, and intensely flavored, confirming the promise of the nose. Concentrated flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, and plum saturate the mid-palate, showcasing the lushness of the old-vine fruit. The signature black pepper spice is present and beautifully integrated, adding a lively, savory dimension that balances the fruit sweetness. Notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, and a subtle toasted oak character contribute complexity without dominating the fruit, providing layers of flavor. The ripe fruit is balanced by integrated acidity, which provides freshness and prevents the wine from feeling heavy.
Appearance: Deeply saturated ruby core leading to vibrant purple and magenta reflections at the rim. The wine is notably opaque, showcasing impressive color density characteristic of concentrated old-vine Zinfandel. It appears clear and brilliant, leaving slow, thick tears on the glass, hinting at its concentration and structure.
Aroma: The nose is intense, complex, and immediately inviting, reflecting the power and depth of old-vine fruit and the unique Monte Rosso terroir. Dominant aromas of ripe black fruit, feature concentrated scents of blackberry jam, dark cherry, and sun-ripened plum. Classic Zinfandel black pepper is a prominent feature, adding a spicy, savory lift that is characteristic of the varietal and potentially amplified by the site. Seamlessly integrated are notes from oak aging; vanilla bean, a hint of smoky char, and sweet spice (like clove or cinnamon). There are also subtle hints of licorice and dark chocolate, adding further depth and complexity that emerge from the concentrated fruit and oak interaction.
