2022 NCDP Rhone Style Red Blend, Napa Valley
Oak Knoll District & Calistoga, Napa Valley
Taking inspiration from the beautiful wines of the Rhone region in France, NCDP captures what we were looking for modeling this wine after the great Grenache/Syrah blends of Chateneuf Du Pape. The Grenache hailing from Calistoga showcases red cherry, herbal undertones and wild berry profile which are the perfect counterpoint to the meaty, dark berry fruit flavors and rich mouthfeel from Syrah coming from Napa's Oak Knoll District. A classic rhone blend, our first from Napa Valley showing off all the goods.
Profile
The palate is medium-to-full bodied, rich, and beautifully balanced, delivering a complex array of flavors that mirror the nose. A burst of ripe red and dark fruit coats the palate – juicy cherry, wild berry, plum, and concentrated blackberry. The savory and herbal notes (black pepper, dried herbs, olive) are well-integrated, adding layers of complexity that prevent the wine from being solely fruit-driven. There's a lovely interplay between the bright, fresh fruit from the Grenache and the deeper, richer notes from the Syrah. Integrated acidity provides freshness and balance, supporting the fruit and extending the finish.
Appearance: Medium to deep ruby core with vibrant garnet and red-purple reflections extending to the rim, showcasing the blend of Syrah's depth and Grenache's brightness. The wine is clear and brilliant, displaying good color intensity. Moderate viscosity is evident, leaving slow, slightly stained tears on the glass.
Aroma: The aroma is immediately expressive and complex, beautifully capturing the intended Rhone inspiration and the strengths of each varietal. It offers a compelling blend of ripe red and dark fruits: the Calistoga Grenache contributes vibrant notes of red cherry, wild raspberry, and sun-drenched plum, while the Oak Knoll Syrah layers in deeper scents of blackberry, black currant, and a subtle 'meaty' or savory character (think cured meat or olive tapenade). The "herbal undertones" from the Grenache add classic Rhone complexity – expect notes of dried garrigue, thyme, or lavender. Classic black pepper and white pepper spice are also present, adding a savory lift. Hints of licorice, subtle earthy notes, and perhaps a whisper of warm spice (clove, cinnamon) from potential oak aging round out the captivating bouquet.
