2023 Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Dutton Ranch - Russian River Valley, Sonoma County

$75.00

The Green Valley of the Russian River Valley is an ideal terroir for growing Pinot Noir, particularly in it's renowned Goldridge soils. This small, cool-climate sub-appellation is often blanketed by coastal fog, which moderates temperatures and extends the growing season. The Goldridge soils, a fine sandy loam, are well-draining and nutrient-poor, encouraging the vines to develop deep root systems and concentrate their energy on producing small, intensely flavored grapes. Pinot Noir from this area is celebrated for its elegance, vibrant acidity, and complex layers of red fruit, earth, and spice, reflecting the unique combination of climate and soil that defines the Green Valley.

Profile

Palate: The palate is elegant, vibrant, and layered, delivering a pure expression of red fruit and complex secondary notes. Bright red fruit flavors dominate – tart cherry, juicy raspberry, and cranberry are prominent, showcasing the cool-climate influence. The earthy and savory notes from the nose carry through, adding depth and complexity (forest floor, a hint of pepper). The oak influence is supportive, providing a framework of spice and subtle vanilla without overwhelming the delicate fruit. The defining characteristic of the palate is its vibrant, refreshing acidity, which provides energy and length, balancing the fruit and subtle richness derived from oak and whole cluster.

Visual: Medium ruby core with vibrant cherry and garnet hues extending to a slightly lighter, luminous rim. The color is typically transparent for Pinot Noir, showcasing its inherent elegance. It appears brilliantly clear and bright, with moderate viscosity and fast-moving, stained tears on the glass.

Nose: The aroma is highly aromatic, lifted, and complex, a beautiful expression of Green Valley Pinot Noir in a cool vintage, complemented by winemaking nuances. It leads with bright, pure notes of red fruit: think fresh red cherry, wild strawberry, and ripe raspberry. Intertwined are classic Pinot Noir earthy notes of forest floor, damp earth, or subtle mushroom, reflecting the Goldridge soils. The 30% whole cluster adds layers of complexity: distinctive black pepper and white pepper spice, a lovely floral lift (perhaps violet or rose), and a hint of savory stem inclusion. The 50% new French oak contributes well-integrated notes of warm baking spice (clove, cinnamon), vanilla bean, and a subtle cedary or toasted character. The overall nose is harmonious and evolving.

This 2023 Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir is a beautiful and highly successful expression of Green Valley terroir and quality winemaking. It perfectly captures the elegance, vibrant acidity, and complex layers of red fruit, earth, and spice characteristic of this renowned sub-appellation. The judicious use of whole cluster and French oak adds complexity and structure without masking the pure fruit. It is a balanced, aromatic, and refined Pinot Noir that is both a pleasure to drink now for its freshness and complexity and promises further development with cellar aging.
