2019 Tondre Grapefield Riesling, Santa Lucia Highlands
Tondre Grapefield - Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey
Tondre Grapefield is a highly respected, family-owned vineyard located in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) AVA in Monterey County, California. Farmed meticulously by the Alarid family (often known as Tondre Alarid), it benefits from the region's characteristic cool climate, influenced by morning fog and strong afternoon winds drawn from the nearby Monterey Bay.
While Tondre Grapefield is most famous for its exceptional Pinot Noir (which constitutes the majority of its plantings) and also grows Chardonnay, it does have a notable block of Riesling.

A prominent mineral character, mirroring the nose, runs through the taste, adding complexity and a sense of place – a cool, stony minerality. The finish carries lingering citrus and mineral notes.

Nose: The nose is immediately lifted, vibrant, and intensely aromatic, showcasing the pure varietal character of cool-climate Riesling from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Primary aromas of bright citrus fruit dominate, led by zesty lime peel, fresh lemon juice, and subtle grapefruit. Crisp green apple and juicy pear notes add a layer of orchard fruit complexity. Distinctive secondary notes of white blossoms (like jasmine or lily), and a refreshing mineral character – perhaps wet stone or a hint of saline from the coastal influence – emerge as the wine opens up. There are no discernible oak notes, allowing the purity of the fruit and terroir to shine. The aroma is clean, focused, and invigorating, promising a palate of vibrant freshness.
