2023 Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands

Tondre Grapefield - Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County

$75.00

Pinot Noir grapes from Tondre Grapefield in the Santa Lucia Highlands thrive in the region's cool, fog-influenced climate and well-drained soils. Positioned on the elevated slopes of the highlands, Tondre Grapefield benefits from the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean's maritime influence, which extends the growing season and allows the grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining crisp acidity. The vineyard's diverse soils, including sandy loam and gravelly clay, contribute to the depthย and structure of the wine by providing excellent drainage and encouraging concentrated fruitย production.

Profile

Palate: The palate is rich, vibrant, and beautifully structured, delivering concentrated fruit flavors framed by complex savory notes and bright acidity. Ripe red and black fruit flavors dominate – sweet cherry, dark cherry, juicy raspberry, and a touch of plum are prominent, reflecting the vineyard's ability to achieve ripeness in a cool climate. The savory and peppery notes from the nose carry through, adding depth and a sense of place (earth, spice, perhaps a hint of cured meat). The oak is seamlessly integrated, providing a subtle backdrop of spice and complexity. The wine's structure is supported by vibrant, refreshing acidity which balances the fruit and alcohol, making the palate feel lively and energetic.

Visual: Medium ruby core with vibrant cherry and garnet hues extending to a slightly lighter, luminous rim. The color is transparent yet shows good concentration, typical of quality Pinot Noir from this region. It appears brilliantly clear and bright, with moderate viscosity and slow-moving, stained tears on the glass.

Nose: The aroma is intense, complex, and beautifully lifted, showcasing the unique character of Tondre Grapefield and the Santa Lucia Highlands. It presents a generous mix of ripe red and darker fruit: think sweet cherry, black cherry, ripe raspberry, and a hint of blackberry. Underlying the fruit are classic earthy and savory notes characteristic of the region and soil: forest floor, damp earth, and a subtle mineral or crushed rock character. The 30% whole cluster inclusion adds significant aromatic complexity: distinctive black pepper and white pepper spice, a lovely floral component (violet, rose petal), and a subtle savory stem note. The 50% new French oak is well-integrated, contributing elegant notes of warm baking spice (clove, cinnamon), vanilla bean, and a refined suggestion of toast or cedar. The overall nose is highly aromatic, layered, and inviting.
